Oct. 21 marked the official “Back to the Future Day,” and with that, fans turned out in big numbers for a theatrical re-release of the time-travel trilogy.
The re-release generated an estimated $1.65 million in 1,815 North American theaters on Wednesday and a total of $4.8 million worldwide, Universal reported.
The original trilogy grossed more than $416 million over the three films, which included 1985’s “Back to the Future,” 1989’s “Back to the Future Part II” and 1990’s “Back to the Future Part III.”
Internationally, the day grossed an estimated $3.2 million for a worldwide total of $4.8 million.
“Back to the Future Day” has been celebrated in many different ways: On Wednesday, Universal Pictures unveiled a new video of Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd), who delivers a special message to fans from behind the wheel of a DeLorean.
Michael J. Fox was presented with the first “living pair” of power-laced MAG shoes first featured in “Back to the Future 2” courtesy of Nike.
Pepsi also released a limited edition bottle titled Pepsi Perfect.
Way back in 1985, Doc Brown and Marty McFly (Fox) traveled to Oct. 21, 2015 using a souped-up DeLorean.
