Facebook To Finally Make A Dislike Button

Coming right in time for the 2016 presidential election, Facebook is developing the long-awaited “dislike” button. Ever since Facebook’s generous “like” button popped onto our newsfeed, the unruly Internet has clamored for an opposing feature. Until now, the company has steered clear of implementing a “dislike” button in fear of creating a disruptive social enviroment.

But after careful consideration, Facebook is moving forward with the feature and looking to initiate a test run sooner than later. “People have asked about the ‘Dislike’ button for many years … and today is a special day, because today is the day that I actually get to say we are working on it and are very close to shipping a test of it,” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed during a Q&A session earlier today.

So why the change of heart? The plan is to create a place of empathy rather than one of negativity. Basically if your friend posts sad shit, a “dislike” button applies a proverbial band-aid to the situation. “We don’t want to turn Facebook into a forum where people are voting up or down on people’s posts,” Zuckerberg continued. “That doesn’t seem like the kind of community that we want to create: you don’t want to go through the process of sharing some moment that was important to you in your day and have someone downvote it.”

Zuckerberg firmly believes that people want to express empathy and not disdain with the “DISlike” button. In 2015, where people tend to fly off the handle to express their political beliefs, rest assured that the new feature will be used far more for disapproval than a comforting “there there, guy.”
