Jay Z B-Sides and Rarities Concert For Tidal Subscribers

Shortly after coming to his streaming music service’s defense on Twitter, Jay Z (or Jaÿ-Z, as his name was stylized on the cover of his classic 1996 debut Reasonable Doubt — which was, incidentally, recently pulled from rival streaming service Spotify) has announced plans to perform an exclusive concert for TIDAL subscribers, all of whom will be able to stream it live. Taking place on May 13 in an “intimate New York City venue,” the show will feature Hov playing B-sides and a crop of super-rare material. Fans who want to attend the concert,  however, are encouraged to make their own TIDAL playlist and share it on Twitter with the hashtag #TIDALXJAYZ. Winners will be chosen based on the diversity and sequencing of artists and genres.

Jay Z Responds To Tidal Critics

Jay Z’s premium music streaming site Tidal has faced its share of criticism since it launched a few weeks ago, but today he’s offered a response. After promising a “stream of consciousness,” he reaffirmed some of the ideals that the company has espoused from the beginning. He says that the service is meant to be a place “where artists can give their fans music without middlemen.” That apparently means a 75 percent royalty for all artists who use the service, not just the owners who appeared onstage at the launch. He also notes they’ve garnered over 770,000 subscribers in “less than a month,” but Tidal isn’t willing to stop there.

“The iTunes Store wasn’t built in a day,” he wrote. “It took Spotify 9 years to be successful. We are here for the long haul. Please give us a chance to grow & get better.”

Jay Z and Beyonce Releasing Joint Album On Tidal

Last fall, rumors surfaced that Beyoncé and Jay Z were working on a joint album. And it appears that a 2015 release is inevitable.

According to DJ Skee, the highly-anticipated project is nearing completion and will be released exclusively via TIDAL, Jay Z’s streaming service.

This would not be surprising since TIDAL has already produced exclusives from hip-hop’s superstar couple. Jay Z premiered his “Glory” video earlier this month via TIDAL and Beyoncé debuted the piano ballad “Die With You” dedicated to her husband.

Jay Z To Personally Call Tidal Users

Tidal executive Vania Schlogel told Business Insider that Jay Z has been personally calling people who use the site.

Schlogel said that “he called some of his fans and one of them made the funniest comment. He said ‘This is the best customer service call I’ve ever received!'”

But it isn’t just Jay Z who has been calling Tidal subscribers. Jack White and several other high-profile musicians have also been calling their fans up to talk.

Tidal Is Offering The Chance To Attend A Private J Cole Concert

To attract more listeners and users, Tidal is going to have to think outside the box. This is a good start. Tidal is offering users in New York City a chance to see J. Cole perform in a private, intimate setting. The five top NYC Tidal users who listen to the most J. Cole music between the dates April 11 and April 20 will be selected for the show that Tidal calls “Better than front row. Closer than backstage.” Cole has been active in promoting Tidal to his fans. Following his homecoming show at St. John’s, Cole hosted a special meet and greet for the top J. Cole Tidal listeners following the show. Based on his loyal fan base–evidenced by the big first week sales of his album 2014 Forest Hills Drive–listeners will surely flock to Tidal in an attempt to see their favorite MC up close and personal.

On Thurs (April 9) night, Cole returned to St. John’s University in Queens, New York to perform at his Alma Mater. Though he graduated from the school, the rapper never received his diploma after failing to return a library book or pay the fee. The powers that be must have been happy to have him back on campus because administrators waived the fee and finally gave Cole his diploma. “Tonight, I guess the let me slide,” he told The Village Voice.
