Nike Celebrates 30 Years of the Nike Dunk

The Nike Dunk is easily one of the most iconic models of sneaker history, tracing its roots all the way back to 1985, when it was first introduced. To celebrate its 30th anniversary,Nike has released a detailed outline of its story, from inception to the legend it has become today.

At the time, basketball had become a cultural phenomenon and sneakers were enjoying tons of off-court popularity, reaching as far as the fashion world. The first iteration was sketched by Peter Moore and was called the “College Color High”. It was an artistic mash-up of different silhouettes, taking cues from the Air Force 1, which had released three years prior. The traction design outsole closely resembles the one found on the Air Jordan 1, which launched just months before, and several other elements were taken from the Nike Terminator. Three decades later, the Nike Dunk remains as a classic in the sneaker community, recognized for its performance and street style.
