Jay Z B-Sides and Rarities Concert For Tidal Subscribers

Shortly after coming to his streaming music service’s defense on Twitter, Jay Z (or Jaÿ-Z, as his name was stylized on the cover of his classic 1996 debut Reasonable Doubt — which was, incidentally, recently pulled from rival streaming service Spotify) has announced plans to perform an exclusive concert for TIDAL subscribers, all of whom will be able to stream it live. Taking place on May 13 in an “intimate New York City venue,” the show will feature Hov playing B-sides and a crop of super-rare material. Fans who want to attend the concert,  however, are encouraged to make their own TIDAL playlist and share it on Twitter with the hashtag #TIDALXJAYZ. Winners will be chosen based on the diversity and sequencing of artists and genres.

Instagram Debuts @Music, Its First Content Vertical

Instagram has unveiled @music, the Facebook-owned company’s first-ever content vertical and dedicated portal for highlighting artists and their activities.

“For the past four years, we have become the home for artists big and small — a place where people across the musical spectrum come to share stories, reveal their creativity and connect directly with fans,” Instagram founder and CEO Kevin Systrom wrote in a post on the company’s blog Wednesday morning (April 29).

Music has long been an important driver of the 300 million users currently active on Instagram — more than 25 percent of the app’s top accounts are musicians, with Beyonce (30.9 million) the platform’s No. 1 most-followed account, followed closely by the likes of Ariana Grande (30.1 million), Taylor Swift (28.3 million),Justin Bieber (26 million), Miley Cyrus (18.3 million) and Rihanna and Katy Perry(who each have 17.7 million apiece).

Kendrick Lamar Earns The Cover Of Mass Appeal

A kid on the Internet pointed out that Section.80 is outlined like a book; good kid, m.A.A.d city like a film; and To Pimp A Butterfly like a poem. Is that how you see it and was that planned?

Yeah, definitely. [There]’s actually a sketch of braille that’s added to the title hidden inside the [CD] booklet that I don’t think nobody has caught yet. You can actually feel the bump lines. But if you can see it, which is the irony of it, you can break down the actual full title of the album.

Thats dope. You told MTV that the original title was going to be 2 Pimp A Caterpillar, since the acronym would be 2.P.A.C. Why did you change it?

Well, I just liked the contrast. These are things that I think a long time about. Everything is intricate. I wouldn’t say intricate, but it’s important for me. It was something about “butterfly,” how soft it sounds, and how hard “pimp” sounds. It was just the contrast. That’s how my music is. It’s a roller coaster. It’s cohesive enough, but it’s up and down. You’re going through these different emotions, and I wanted [the title] to reflect that.
