In what might be either the coolest or strangest move of all time, the Catholic Church’s most powerful man Pope Francis is releasing a prog-rock album titled Wake Up!. Produced and artistically directed by Don Giulio Neroni, the Vatican-approved album is set to be released November 27, with His Holiness lending only his vocals to the project, although he is said to be a budding musician as well. We promise we’re not making this up.
The announcement comes shortly after the Pope made his historic visit to New York City Thursday, where he visited the streets of Manhattan before making stops at the United Nations to take on environmental issues, income inequality, and other social issues. Rolling Stone, who first premiered the story, was able to get their hands on a preview track from the album, giving listeners of what’s to come on the project.
Titled “Wake Up! Go! Go! Forward!,” the slow-burning, landscaping track is an inspirational mix, filled with big horns, a serious guitar accompaniment and, most notably, a vintage prog-rock sound. Tony Pagliuca, who is a veteran prog-rock guitarist and who composed the lead single, told Rolling Stone, “In the ’70s, I founded the prog-rock band Le Orme and topped the charts, toured Italy and U.K. and had the chance to collaborate with international artists like Peter Hammill and David Jackson. During the years, I also made an important journey of faith. When Don Giulio Neroni asked me to collaborate on this CD, I immediately accepted with enthusiasm. Putting my music in the service of the words and the voice of Pope Francis has been a fantastic experience and a very interesting artistic challenge.”
