Apple May Have A $20 Million Lawsuit With TIDAL Over Drake Performance at Lil Weezyana Fest

If you’ve been enjoying the music of OVO Sound Radio on Apple’s Beats 1 radio station lately, it might easy to forget that Drake was days away from being an ambassador for a rival music steaming service. Apple Music, of course, managed to lure Drake away from Jay Z’s streaming platform, and so far it seems like the Toronto-based rap star made the right call. On Friday night however, Drake lived out his “Charged Up” lyric “I got me a deal with Apple but I still feel entitled,” and helped instigate some mudslinging between the two rival companies in the process.

According to PageSix, Apple reportedly threatened Tidal with a potential $20 million lawsuit over a Drake appearance Lil Wayne’s Lil WeezyAna Fest which took place on Friday, August 28. Lil WeezyAna Fest, a charity benefit in New Orleans for Wayne’s Tha Carter Fund on the tenth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina was held to benefit kids affected by the hurricane. The event was exclusively live streamed via Tidal, whom Lil Wayne went into business with earlier this year.

Tidal’s live stream seemed to be running smoothly until around 11 P.M. The live stream suddenly cut out shortly after Weezy announced a guest artist, although not by name. Less than 30 minutes later the stream returned to the sight of fireworks and a big band performance. No guest artist was anywhere in sight. It quickly became clear however, that the guest performance everyone watching at home was excluded from, was by none other than Drake. Seeing as Drizzy signed an exclusive deal with Apple just days prior to the launch of Tidal, the former wasn’t having it.

Regarding what caused the blackout of the live stream, PageSix obtained the following statement from a source:

“Legal letters have been sent to Tidal warning that Drake cannot appear on the Tidal stream of the festival, either solo or part of a group, and if the warning was ignored, the liabilities could be up to $20 million.”

Prior to Lil WeezyAna Fest, it was rumored that Drake was planning to make a guest appearance at the benefit concert. Hence, why Apple was already on the defensive prior to showtime. And while Tidal did oblige Apple’s threats and blackout the live stream during Drake’s set, they still managed to get a few digs in by trolling the rival music streaming platform on Twitter.

Stay tuned to see if Apple decides to move forward with legal action against Tidal.

2/2 We’ll be back after the performance.
