The New York Jets’ season is off to it’s typically abysmal start, and the team has yet to even take a preseason snap. Projected starting quarterback Geno Smith will miss the next 6-10 weeks of action after he had his jaw broken by a teammate, who has since been released.
The Jets quickly released linebacker IK Enemkpali, who was the one who punched Smith after the incumbent starting quarterback allegedly put a finger in Enemkpali’s face during a heated argument. “You can’t tolerate that,” first-year head coach Todd Bowles said in an impromptu press conference. “When you have a team and a bunch of side issues you can’t tolerate that. It’s something that happened in the locker room and we’re dealing with it internally and that’s what we’ll do.”
The Jets currently employ Ryan Fitzpatrick and Baylor rookie Bryce Petty as quarterbacks on the team currently, The cause for the fight wasn’t immediately revealed, but Bowles stated in the conference that it was over something that could’ve been solved without violence.
“I’ll let them tell you,” Bowles said of Smith and Enemkpali. “It’s something very childish that sixth-graders could have talked about … If they want to tell you what happened they’ll tell you what happened. I told them I wouldn’t say anything.”
Smith is likely to miss the start of the NFL regular season.
