Cincinnati Cop Indicted In Senseless Murder

A white University of Cincinnati police officer who shot an unarmed black man in the head at a traffic stop has been indicted on a murder charge, prosecutors announced on Wednesday.

The victim, Samuel DuBose, was pulled over July 19 for not having a license plate on the front of his car. Officer Ray Tensing, who is white, was wearing a body camera, which recorded the shooting. Footage of the incident, released publicly at the end of the press conference, shows Tensing firing into DuBose’s car.

Tensing shot DuBose once in the head. DuBose, 43, was unarmed at the time, prosecutors say.

The video shows Tensing pulling his cruiser up behind DuBose’s car and announcing the traffic stop into his radio. He can be seen exiting his car and approaching DuBose, and asking for his license while explaining he was pulled over for not having a front license plate. When DuBose fails to produce his license, Tensing becomes agitated. Tensing asks DuBose to take off his seatbelt.

“I’m going to ask you again, do you have your license on you,” Tensing says, though DuBose has already indicated that he does not have it with him.

“I have a license, you can run my name,” DuBose says.

“OK, is that not on you then?” Tensing says.

“I don’t think I have it on me,” DuBose says.

Tensing then asks if Dubose is driving on a suspended license, which DuBose denies.

After a few moments, the car appears to roll slightly, and Tensing yells before firing a shot into the car. The car is heard crashing up the street and Tensing runs after it on foot. DuBose died at the scene.
